Player Performance

Nabil Bentaleb, despite going to the World Cup, started alongside √Čtienne Capoue as one of the two passing defensive midfielders. Centrally we looked sound for the first 29 minutes, controlling the game to start with but then Kyle Naughton was sent off, Capoue had to go back to centre-back and Christian Eriksen drop a little deeper, while Erik Lamela and especially Aaron Lennon dropped back to help defend.

By and large he had a good game, he had to take charge of the centre of the field and even managed a rasping shot late on in the game. He did make a couple of errors on the half way line giving the ball away but he wasn't the only culprit. As the defensive midfielder he made himself available the whole game to receive the ball off the centre-backs and move it predominantly forward.

Sandro looked once again way off the pace against Schalke and seems to be waiting for a transfer with Capoue and Bentaleb the first choice defensive pair. With 10 me it had to be a backs to the wall performance and that's what we got. An underestimated player who is still learning the game but just like last season looked at home at this level.
