Player Performance

Aaron Lennon will of course have his critics but as Tim Sherwood said, he kept picking him because he is the best defensive wide man Spurs have and it allows freedom elsewhere, last season to Christian Eriksen.

Ten men away to West Ham is just the game we needed his defensive duties. When Naughton went off he was to be found over on the right giving Dier a hand and he and Lamela switched wings when one followed the ball across. An unspectacular game, his one chipped shot went over, which his detractors will say he did nothing.

He however put in a defensive shift and kept us tight, he stats reveal that he didn't venture forward, leaving that to Eriksen or occasionally Lamela. When you are down to ten, you have to keep the ball and he rarely gave it away but all his work was racking and pushing the player with the ball to pass where he wanted him to.

Like Lamela on the other side, this was not a game for his attacking and his defending was just what we needed.
