Jackson Martínez bid?

It seems we may be widening the net for strikers with a reported offer, that is unlikely to be enough, for Colombian forward Jackson Martínez of Porto.

Jackson Martínez bid

Spurs are believed to have met with Peppino Tirri, Martínez's agent, in May when he revealed Porto wanted close to £30 million (37.90m) for Martínez.

His buyout clause is £31.66 million (40m) and Tottenham have placed a bid believed to be around £18 million (22.74m).

Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Valencia, Atlético Madrid, Inter and Roma are all said to be interested in the 27 year-old, although Tirri revealed there had been no contact with Inter.

"We're honored by Galliani's kind words about Jackson, but we haven't had any contact with Milan."
On another occasion he said there had been no contact with Roma either.

"In Italy we have had very little contact, but for sure there have not been any offers from Roma.

"There are, instead, opportunities abroad. Arsenal and Valencia in particular are very interested in Jackson Martinez."

Atlético Madrid had an offer on the table of £19.79 million (25m), which included add-ons, as reported by Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias. The Spanish champions have now bought Croatian striker Mario Mandžukić to replace Diego Costa.

When that offer came in Porto were going to wait to see if anyone made a better offer.

In January Martínez said he would move to a higher level of football.

"If I get a chance to play for a high level club like Arsenal I wouldn't hesitate to accept it."

More recently he spoke to La FM about the rumours.

"I do not know what will happen. I have a contract for two more years with Porto and I know there is interest from several clubs.

“It’s normal if a player is playing well, but I have always respected my contracts. Only time will tell what will happen."

Martínez has certainly scored goals wherever he has been and did so from few opportunities at the World Cup in Brazil recently.

He is 28 in October which only gives a couple of season until he hits the 30 mark so he wouldn't be a long-term plan and is another who doesn't have Premier League experience.

As with any transfer situation a club has many irons in the fire, players are sounded out, players agents are sounded out, clubs are sounded out, equally clubs and agents offer players so it's no surprise to see us listed with several players.

Then of course there is the press game where you link yourself to a player to try and force another clubs hand, or the agents trying to get a better deal for their client.

I'd be surprised if we sign him myself.
