Today we look at recent striker articles.

Why Spurs need to buy a Striker looks at a potential problem we have that it would be foolish, indeed potentially costly not to rectify.

Are Spurs missing a striker target takes a quick statistical assessment of a players impact on the game through goals or assists. Who comes out on top of Christian Benteke, Romelu Lukaku, Carlos Tevez, Miroslav Klose, Javier Hernández, Wilfried Bony and Loïc Rémy?

Loosely tied but an important topic is the lessons Spurs should learn from Germany, lessons we should have been learning for years but haven't been.

Right let's get into the Tottenham News Shorts - Issue 31, recent news which concerns birthdays, Mauricio Pochettino, various pieces of Spurs news, Yacine Brahimi and Jan Vertonghen.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino is delighted Hugo Lloris has signed a new contract to extend his stay with the club. It's positive move that sends a message to other players like Vertonghen.

“This is very good news for Tottenham Hotspur, for us and his team-mates.

“Hugo is a great goalkeeper and it’s very important he’s excited to stay with us and we are excited that he’s going to be here with us. It’s very important for the future.”

The player have flown out to the States with unconfirmed reports that they went without Sandro and Vlad Chiriches. Chiriches apparently had a problem with his passport for which I would be asking why wasn't that sorted earlier?

That's the job of the travel specialist and whoever they are dealing with at the club. If you are arranging travel for a group you have to thin of every little details, says someone who used to work in the game.

Emmnanuel Adebayor as we know wasn't going to travel on medical advice, although by all accounts he wanted to. The medical staff didn't let him go only as a precaution so they can keep an eye on him. He'll train with those returning from World Cup duty.

Frank de Boer has said he was really close to becoming our head coach. He has said that if Tottenham had offered him the job he probably have said yes but the board voted for Pochettino over him.

Daily Mail believe Spurs have opened preliminary discussions with Jan Vertonghen regarding a new 5 year contract. Bit late negotiations started before the World Cup!

Barcelona are of course now showing an interest but the news in Spain is that the Spanish giants are set to pay the release clause to Valencia for 30 year-old defender Jérémy Mathieu.

They had hoped a reduced fee would be sufficient, then offered a selection of fringe players, none of whom interested Valencia leaving Barcelona with little choice if they wanted their man, which apparently they do.

That just leaves one more versatile centre-back to be signed and they can leave Jan alone. He is just one of three other potential targets having failed with an attempt to sign Marquinhos from PSG.

Barcelona director of football, Andoni Zubizarreta fielded questions about centre-back options from reporters as he confirmed the signing of Luis Suárez.
"We thought we were going to have four centre-backs because we thought Puyol would be with us but he's not and we have to cover that position.

"Obviously we're working on buying players and we're hoping to announce a centre-back soon.

"About 90 per cent of clubs in Europe have the same problem, it's a position everyone is working on.

"We're working in the market and we haven't come to a definitive decision on some players we were hoping to sign.

"The only high-profile centre-back that's been signed is David Luiz, who's moved to Paris St Germain.

"It's not easy to find centre-backs who are better than the ones we've got and if we could find them then we would sign them."

"Valencia already know our offer and we want to maintain privacy in the negotiations. Of course we have other alternatives if this falls through.

"Hopefully by La Liga's start we have that centre-back position covered. If we wanted a centre-back before now, we would have signed one.

"We want someone who can put in top performances for many years and that's what we're working on."
