10 Argentinians linked to Spurs

Tottenham have a history with Argentina and those ties are now being strengthened.

10 Argentinians linked to Spurs

For the history of our links with Argentina that go beyond Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa check out Spurs Argentine Connection, which may now need updating.

We have in addition to Erik Lamela his countryman Mauricio Pochettino as Head Coach and since the end of the season we have been linked with potential moves for a series of fellow Argentinians.

Estaban Cambiasso is the latest seems to be on his way to White Hart Lane on a free transfer at the age of 33 according to the Italian media.

Gazzetta Dello Sport are the pushers of this story, now telling us the deal in getting closer and closer, which presumably means Sandro is getting closer and closer to Italy.

Cambiasso has spent 10 seasons at Inter Milan, winning five Scudettos, four Italian Cups, a Champions League and the Club World Cup. Like William Gallas before him he would bring the experience of winning things, the know-how of how to get over the line, something sorely lacking at the club.

On the downside Sandro is the best defensive midfielder in Europe when he is happy with the manager.

In addition we have been linked with, and I am led to believe he was an option on our list, Sporting left-back Marcos Rojo, currently playing at the 2014 World Cup for his country. The apparent imminent arrival of our first choice left-back, Ben Davies, scuppers his chances of joining us.

A smattering of others we have recently been linked with include:

  • Inter Milan 26 year-old attacking midfielder Ricardo Álvarez
  • Valencia 26 year-old midfielder Éver Banega
  • Benfica 26 year-old winger Nicolás Gaitán
  • River Plate 18-year-old striker Sebastián Driussi
  • Sevilla 27 year-old centre-back Federico Fazio
  • Porto 20 year-old winger Juan Iturbe
  • Real Madrid 26 year-old winger Ángel di María
  • Benfica 27 year-old centre-back Ezequiel Garay

We can't buy them all but of that list you'd only rule out possibly Garay and Fazio because of their ages. Delve a little deeper and Garay is 28 in October so has just 2 seasons before he's 30 and declining in value so even before his move to join Andre Villas-Boas it is highly unlikely there was ever any genuine interest.

Fazio however would have 3 season, his birthday being in March, before he hit the declining 30 mark. His agent is angling for a move, Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool have all been linked for a player with an £8 million buyout clause.

First question, does he speak English, absolutely essential he can communicate with the keeper, the back line and midfield.

Three wingers so you'd only buy one and Angel do Maria would never come to Tottenham anyway. Gaitán is expected to join his fellow former Benfica teammate in Russia with Andre Villas-Boas. Juan Iturbe has been dubbed the 'New Messi' so if he is half as good snap the 20 year-old up.

That leaves an attacking midfielder, neither of which jump out at you. Éver Banega is a central midfielder rather than a creative number 10 and is though to be interested in a move to Marseilles while Álvarez has a contract until 2018 and has been under whelming at Inter.

Of the list linked the two youngsters look the best buys Iturbe and Driussi, The young striker is highly thought of and strikers are worth their weight in gold. Snapping up a South American striker is worth the risk, the potential rewards are massive as their European value soars if they regularly hit the back of the net.
