Paulinho - Never crossed my mind to leave Spurs

One of the 'Summer Seven' last summer Paulinho has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer.

Paulinho - Never crossed my mind to leave Spurs

Having moved to Tottenham for £17 million he started well under Andre Villas-Boas but an injury and Tim Sherwood taking over saw a loss of form and periods out of the side. He expressed his dissatisfaction at not playing and rumours started of a move to Chelsea after the World Cup, which originated from newspapers in Brazil.

The box-to-box midfielder has again moved to dismiss any rumours of an exit from Tottenham but admits speaking to his agent at the time.

“I was on the bench for a period, but I never considered returning to Brazil. It’s complicated for a player when he goes to Europe, you have to be strong.

“I went through complicated situations in Lithuania and Poland and returned to Brazil. Of course I did talk with my agent, it’s normal when you are upset. But the talk of returning to Brazil never existed, it never crossed my mind.”

Paulinho has put in two disappointing displays for Brazil against Croatia and Mexico with Tim Sherwood, Clarance Seedorf and now Brazilian legend Zico slating his performance in their second group game.

"Paulinho once again had a game to forget. He is a problem now because he is a shadow of the player who last year proved so important in creative and defensive duties. He is a true box-to-box player ………….. and I advised him to keep playing that way."
Spurs fans would agree, his performances tailed off alarmingly after a Charlie Adams tackle put him on the sidelines. Since then he has simply made easy sideways passed and produced nothing creative at all. It has to be a concern whether the injury has mentally affected him and he is looking not to get hurt now.

"Paulinho had a tough season at Tottenham and it’s blatantly clear that he lacks rhythm and confidence. He is not as incisive as he used to be. That had obvious effects in Brazil’s midfield."

There is intense interest in him from clubs around Europe but Tottenham will be hoping to see the player they bought last summer and not this shadow of a player we are seeing now.
