Espanyol receive bid for Héctor Moreno

Franco Baldini flew to meet Mauricio Pochettino and have dinner with officials from his former club to sound them out about buying the 26 year-old Mexican centre-half.

French club Marseille have bid £4.81 million (€6m) but Espanyol who have to sell players each year to balance the books, especially now La Liga clubs have to pay taxes and bank loans back after being ordered to by the EU, want £8.01 million (€10m).

Espanyol president Joan Collet revealed the Ligue I side bid to the Spanish press recently.

“It wasn’t anything official, but yes, I met with an intermediary and a foreign club, who stated their interest in the player.”

AS, a daily sports newspaper in Spain report that that meeting was with Bayram Tutumlu, an agent based in Luxembourg, and Olympique Marseilles president, Vincent Labrune. They presented an informal bid of £4.81 million (€6m) deemed to low by Collet.

The La Liga side are reluctant to sell but the money plus the players desire have resigned them to his summer departure. They have stepped up their search for a successor.

He is not certain to arrive at Tottenham with Manchester United interested but their first-choice is Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen. Everton and Swansea have watched the player as did Southampton when Pochettino was there.

Marseilles are managed by Maecelo Bielsa and Pochettino is a disciple of the Bielsa system of play so if the master wants the player, he should fit the disciples system.

Moreno has excelled at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and caught the eye against the host nation as Mexico grabbed a deserved draw. His tournament is not over as Mexico progressed out of the group to the knockout stages where they will now come up against Daniel Levy's former number one candidate for the Head Coach position at Tottenham, Louis Van Gaal.

Holland play Mexico tomorrow (Sunday) at 5pm UK time at the 67,037 capacity Estádio Castelão in Fortaleza, Brazil.
