Caulker a better option than Kaboul or Chiriches

There seems little down side to buying back Steven Caulker who has also been linked with Liverpool and Swansea.

Caulker a better option than Kaboul or Chiriches

It's no secret that Steven Caulker has a clause in his contract giving Tottenham first option on him or that he left because he wanted guaranteed football, or as close as you can get to guaranteed.

Spurs fans can't understand why the 22 year-old was sold but it was quite simple, he told the club he is not going to sit on a bench, he wanted to play football. AVB made it clear he wasn't a first choice so he left rather than be unhappy bench warming.

One season on, with Cardiff City relegated and having to reduce their expenditure Steven Caulker could once again become an option at the heart of the Tottenham defence.

Caulker had an excellent season for Cardiff despite their relegation and most Spurs fans would be happy to see him return. Clearly for him it's not about money at this stage of his career but about playing.

New Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino like ball playing centre-halves and he certainly fits the bill. In addition he is good in the air which immediately puts him ahead of Vald Chiriches, while his ground skills put him ahead of Younes Kaboul.

Both had very poor error prone seasons. Tottenham made a massive 33 defensive errors last season, 21 of which led to a goal (Southampton 11, Arsenal 10, Chelsea 4, Everton 6). Caulker would reduce that number and you can't imagine him making the mistakes those two were making.

With Chiriches's ability on the floor and Kaboul's ability in the air we would get the best of both in one package. The clause in his contract where we can have him back and Cardiff don't have to pay the remainder of the fee means he would be cheap, even if we gave them a little something extra to reach his current market value.

When Kaboul returned from Portsmouth they still owed us money so that was written off and the Frenchman joined for a relatively low fee. The same situation could now apply to Caulker and he has had the benefit of a full season playing.

He is home grown and came through the Spurs ranks so knows the club, fits Pochettino's system and being home grown that would allow the club to sell Michael Dawson or Kyle Naughton in addition to Jake Livermore.

He had been expected to be a Spurs stalwart by fans perhaps he still will be.
