10 Fastest World Cup Goals

The 10 Fastest World Cup Goals in history was updated yesterday when the USA took their place at number five.

Former Tottenham striker, now with Seattle Sounders, and USA captain Clint Dempsey scored after just 29 seconds to claim his place in history.

Incredibly three of the 10 Fastest World Cup Goals were scored on the same day, 16th June.

Four of the 10 Fastest World Cup Goals were scored in 2 tournaments, France in 1938 and Chile in 1962.

Here is the top 10 Fastest World Cup Goals.

Top 10 Fastest World Cup Goals

10. Adalbert Deșu (1930): 50 seconds

14 July 1930
Estadio Pocitos, Montevideo, Uruguay
First round - Group 3

Romania 3-1 Peru

Romania: Deșu 1, Stanciu 79, Kovacs 89
Peru: Souza 75

The first ever World Cup was held in Uruguay and details of it are rather sketchy. There were no statistical records and no data driven journalism but it's clear a Romanian goal was scored after 50 seconds. There is some dispute over the identity the scorer, some believe Constantin Stanciu scored but FIFA credit the goal to Deșu. Romania won the game but didn't make it out of the three team group with only host nation and eventual winners Uruguay qualifying.

9. Flórián Albert (1962): 50 seconds

03 June 1962
Braden Copper Company Stadium, Rancagua, Chile

Hungary 6-1 Bulgaria

Albert scored 4 goals at the 1962 World Cup and was joint top scorer in the tournament. He was a legend at his club  Ferencvárosi TC Ferencvaros who named their stadium after him in 2007. Italy 2-1 France

Italy: P. Rossi 29, Zaccarelli 54
France: Lacombe 1

French striker Lacombe started the 1978 World Cup in Argentina with a goal after 37 seconds of the opening match. He headed home from Didier Six's cross as France tried to beat Italy for the first time since 1920. That goal was their only joy in the match however as they went on to lose 2-1. France had to settle for a third place in the group also losing 2-1 Argentina before defeating Hungary. Host nation and eventual winners Argentina qualified with Italy topping the group.

Sweden: Nyberg 1

Sweden finished the tournament in fourth place. After Hungary had thrashed them in the semi-final (they lost to Italy in the final) Brazil beat them in the third place play-off. Nyberg's goal was the second goal after 35 seconds in the same tournament was scant consolation for the defeat. He scored 3 goals at the tournament.

6. Émile Veinante (1938): 35 seconds

He played in the 1930 World Cup but was only a reserve 4 years later before leading his countries attack on home soil.

Germany outside right Ernst Lehner held the record of Fastest World Cup Goal until 1962. The TSV Schwaben Augsburg wide man liked to take players on and was considered to be the best non-professional player in Europe. It was a bitter encounter and Lehner's two goals helped Germany secure third place in a stadium that was later destroyed in a WW2 bombing raid.

The proud holder of that 40-year-old record for Fastest World Cup Goal was Vaclav Mašek, a Czechoslovakian striker. Just 4 days after Flórián Albert had netted one after 50 seconds Mašek slotted a ball into the bottom corner of the net after just 16 seconds.  Despite losing this match Czechoslovakia went through as group runners-up to Brazil who they drew with 0-0. They eventually finished the tournament as runners-up losing in the final to Brazil 3-1.

The 40-year-old Şükür put himself in the record books with the fastest world cup goal after just 11 seconds in the 2002 third place play-off game in South Korea.

Guus Hiddink watched as his South Korea side kicked off, played the ball backwards, eventually to Hong Myung-Bo. The defender lost the ball under pressure from Ilhan Mansiz, who quickly fed Hakan Şükür. The Parma striker made no mistake, slotting the home to silence from the patriotic and disbelieving crowd.
