Spurs interested in Benfica winger

Tottenham continue their search for players to fill key positions despite having no manager, the latest coming to light being Benfica winger Nicolás Gaitán.

Manchester United are keen on the 26 year-old Argentinian and of course no transfer target of ours is complete without mentioning Liverpool interest.

Gaitán came on with 25 minutes to play at White Hart lane in the Europa League tie and scored 3 goals in 25 league appearances for the Portuguses Champions. In total 32 games produced the 3 goals and not one single assist, the season before in 20 games he had only 1 assist, so a grand total of 1 assist in his last 52 games.

That probably demonstrates that there is more to life than stats!

Benfica won the Portuguese league, the Portuguese cup and lost in the final of the Europa League on penalties. In previous rounds they put out ourselves and Juventus, having got into the competition by losing another competition.

Luis Figo said recently about speculation surrounding Gaitan that he was ready for a big club.
"He's a young man with great quality. I do not get busy with the players, so I cannot tell if the transfer rumours are true or false.

"But he has all the qualities to play for a big club."

However Gaitan has poured cold water on any transfer talk suggesting he wants to stay at Benfica.

“I’m very happy with the three trophies and now I deserve a little rest. I’ll return to Benfica and I want to make history by winning a fourth title.”

Manchester City and PSG have also been monitoring the player. There were reports in December that Man Utd had tabled a £20 million bid but the Portuguese wanted £40 million. It is also believed they have turned down a bid of £25 million from Inter.

Boca Juniors will receive 20% of any transfer fee so Benfica want an excessive amount to compensate. This is a well worn route for Brazilians. They move to Portugal with sell on clauses and the clubs then try to put massive buyout clauses into contracts,

It would look as if he is going to be out of our price range and salary wise we wouldn't compete with any club chasing him except perhaps Inter.
