Mario Balotelli for Erik Lamela

A story has emerged from the Italian press than Spurs have offered a swop deal to AC Milan involving Mario Balotelli and Erik Lamela.

Italian paper Tuttosport are claiming that Franco Baldini is working to offload the 21 year-old Argentinian who has not settled and is not happy in England. They say the aim to to bring a new striker to White Hart Lane which could well be guesswork given Jermain Defoe is leaving and Roberto Soldado is out of form.

Balotelli is a top class striker who certainly bangs in the goals, however my question would be how is he going to fit into the team ethic that Louis Van Gaal will want to instill, assuming agreement is reached with Daniel Levy for him to take over.

There is no way Spurs are going to arrange any transfers without the approval of whoever is going to take over, just as they did discussing all transfer dealings with Andre Villas-Boas before he took over.

If the wayward striker can be controlled and he feels he has calmed down, there is no doubt he could score goals for us, he proved himself in the Premier League during his spell at Manchester City. At AC Milan he has scored 24 goals in 38 appearances and at Man City he scored 20 goals in 54 league appearances.

The other aspect that raises questions about a possible deal are his salary requirements. But they may not be as much of a problem as people think. In 2013 his salary was £3.69 million (€4.5m) which is just over £71,000 a week, well within out scope.

Of course we would not be the only team interested, Arsenal are said to want him also and they can offer the 23 year-old Champions League football where we can't. His arrival would certainly create a buzz and add an air of excitement to expectant supporters.

He gave an interview to Italian magazine Soccer Italia in which he said, “The Manchester City fans were fantastic with me and when I left, I said that I’d never be able to see myself in England with another shirt than City’s. But in football, nothing’s impossible.”

He spoke about a problematic relationship with Jose Mourinho who managed him at Inter before he moved to Manchester City, “We both have big personalities and sometimes that caused problems. We respect each other, there is now a healthy friendship.”

He went on to say he has grown up, “I made mistakes in the past and I have no problem admitting it. I’ve matured a lot in the past two years and I don’t think my conduct’s a problem anymore.”

Jermain Defoe out, Mario Balotelli in, yep I could handle that.
